Judy Antonio … private funeral

Judy Antonio, wife of Toowoomba mayor Paul, died at home on Sunday after a long struggle with motor neurone disease.

She was diagnosed with the progressive muscle wasting illness in May 2009 at the age of 57.

Judy was born in Toowoomba but was raised and attended school in Millmerran.

She married Paul in 1969 and the couple had three children.

Earlier this year Judy was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Toowoomba East Rotary Club to recognise her service to the community, especially her contributions to the mentoring program at Toowoomba Flexi School.

The citation read on the night noted that in her early years, Judy was an avid sportsperson, excelling in tennis (Duncan Thompson trophy) and basketball.

She worked in Toowoomba in banking and real estate while her children were being educated.

Later she volunteered with various community groups, including Toowoomba Regional Council’s Disability Advisory Committee.

She become a passionate ambassador for motor neurone disease but still continued to make public appearances with the Mayor at many functions despite being confined to a wheelchair in recent years.

The Antonio family is planning a private ceremony to celebrate her life.

They have asked that residents donate to Motor Neurone Disease research in lieu of sending flowers.
