Former Kingaroy resident Miranda McAleer is another local finalist in the Darling Downs South West division of the Queensland Training Awards.

Miss McAleer, who works as an administrative assistant at the University of Southern Queensland, has been shortlisted for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year.

The Queensland Regional Darling Downs South West Training Awards winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Empire Theatre in Toowoomba on July 22.

Other South Burnett finalists are Huston Nissan mechanic Thomas Hunt (Harry Hauenschild Apprentice of the Year award category) and Kingaroy Joinery (Medium Employer of the Year category).

The winners from the Darling Downs South West round will advance to the State Awards which will be held in Brisbane on September 9.

USQ Vice-Chancellor Prof Jan Thomas congratulated Ms McAleer on her success within the University’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traineeship Program, and her hard work as a USQ staff member.

“Miranda is to be commended on her achievements. She completed a Certificate III in Business as a USQ Trainee and has continued to demonstrate excellence and dedication as an employee at the University,” Prof Thomas said.

“I wish her all the best at the Queensland Regional Darling Downs South West Training Awards.”

Ms McAleer said she was honoured to be named as a finalist.

“I was ecstatic when I found out. I was also surprised, I can’t believe I progressed this far,” she said.

“It’s amazing to be selected amongst a select few from all those that were nominated. I feel it recognises my efforts, and the goals I have set out to achieve.”

Ms McAleer moved from Kingaroy to Toowoomba to take up a position at USQ.

“USQ exceeded my expectations as a workplace, further motivating me to constantly push my work performance and reach my full potential,” she said.

“Throughout my traineeship, I had exposure to numerous records and information management areas such as the USQ Historical Archives, document storage and other related projects. I have improved my written and verbal communication as well as self-reliance, problem solving, and time management skills.”
