Moves to create a new Darling Downs Shire have been quashed by the Toowoomba Regional Council.

The council voted on Tuesday not to support the establishment of  a breakaway shire.

This follows a proposal by the Darling Downs Shire Steering Committee to establish a new Darling Downs Shire consisting of the former Clifton, Millmerran and Pittsworth shires and rural parts of the former Cambooya and Jondaryan shires.

Councillors voted to consider correspondence on the proposal received on February 26 from the Director General, Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning Frank Carroll.

They then voted to advise Mr Carroll that they do not support the proposal by the Darling Downs Shire Steering Committee.

They also encouraged the State Government to “finalise this issue so as to conclude the ongoing speculation that the proposal continues to generate within the local and regional communities”.

The Darling Downs Shire Steering Committee had been pushing for the TRC to approve a referral of their proposal to the Change Commissioner for assessment.

Cr Joe Ramia moved the four motions relating to the proposal.
