Recently elected Toowoomba councillor Nancy Sommerfield confirmed on Friday she has tossed her hat in the ring for LNP preselection for the State seat of Toowoomba South.

Toowoomba South is currently held by John McVeigh who earlier this month was picked as the LNP candidate for the Federal seat of Groom.

Groom is held by Ian Macfarlane (LNP), who announced in February he would retiring at the next Federal Election after 18 years in politics.

The LNP musical chairs means voters will face a by-election in Toowoomba South.

However, the good news is even if Cr Sommerfield is successful in her bid – and there are other challengers, including businessman David Janetzki from Heritage Bank – there will be no need for a new Toowoomba Regional Council poll to fill the vacant spot.

The next most successful candidate at the last TRC election, Craig Stibbard, from Geham, would step into the vacancy.
