Security cameras are a good way to deter rural crime … but their effectiveness relies on getting the right camera for the  job

Police have warned that rural crime continues to be a problem because offenders know it is unlikely anyone will be home during daylight hours.

But they say security cameras can be a good way to combat this problem.

“There are cameras out there that are great if you want to take footage of slower moving targets, such as someone stopping to steal fuel,” a SARCIS spokesman said.

“But a drawback with most cameras is they don’t pick up the licence plates sometimes because they use an infra-red flash.”

Police suggest that if you’re considering investing in security cameras, you should find one that comes with a black flash.

“This means that there is no red glow which you find in some standard infra-red cameras.

“It also reduces the chances of the camera being located by an offender, then damaged or stolen.”

There are cameras available that will specifically pick up the licence plates of vehicles moving around a property.

Some can pick up a vehicle’s registration plate at speeds of up to 80km/h during the day or night.

Police suggest that when considering which camera to buy, property owners should first consider what they want the camera to do.

The camera functions mentioned above – if used together or separately – can provide police with evidence which could be vital in their investigations.
