Popular Wondai entertainers “The Stepping Stones” – Sue Bradley and Geoff Grevell – kept the mood upbeat at the bi-annual “Welcome To Wondai” afternoon in Coronation Park

Wondai is the South Burnett’s friendliest town – it even has Tidy Towns signs to prove it – and recently it held its bi-annual “Welcome To Wondai” afternoon to welcome new residents who’d moved into the area since 2013.

The appointed venue was Coronation Park, and the day kicked off with a choral concert in the nearby Wondai Regional Art Gallery.

The concert was jointly performed by the Wondai QCWA & Community Choir and the Wondai State School Choir, and it attracted an appreciative audience.

Afterwards, guests moved out into the park for a relaxed afternoon of chatting, sampling a mouth-watering range of goodies at the CWA’s stand, browsing several community information stalls set up in the grounds, or just sitting back to enjoy the live music provided by The Stepping Stones.

Children amused themselves playing giant chess on the Park’s outdoor chess board; climbing “Mongrel” the tractor; or having a go at the playground’s musical equipment.

Adults with a motoring bent could also inspect a small but beautifully restored range of antique cars brought along by members of the South Burnett Antique Motor Club, which included a 1975 Rolls Royce and a 1939 Dodge Silver Jubilee.

In late afternoon, children – and many adults – were given paper plane kits and instructions on how to build the perfect plane in preparation for a Paper Plane Flying Contest that preceded an outdoor screening of the new Australian comedy “Paper Planes”.

The air in Coronation Park was soon thick with many different types of planes being tested in the challenging light breeze.

Some proved spectacularly successful, soaring high in the sky before planing long distances over the grass.

But others which nose-dived into the ground just a few metres from their owners showed they were in need of additional refinements, which were quickly applied.

In the end, both children and adults lined up for separate attempts at achieving paper plane glory, with the children showing they were somewhat better than their parents at getting the required lift and distance to secure the prizes on offer.

Shortly after this the sun set and the Tingoora State School P&C’s barbecue fired up to serve hot chips, drinks and other movie fare, with the film screening keeping everyone entertained until early in the evening.

Note: For anyone who missed “Welcome To Wondai”, the Wondai Lions Club will be holding a free meet’n’greet afternoon tea from 2:00pm to 4:30pm on Saturday, October 24, at the Wondai Lions Club pavilion inside the Wondai Sportsgrounds to allow all residents of Wondai and Proston to mingle, chat and get to know each other.
