The Wondai Chamber Of Commerce may have wound up 18 months ago, but the legacy of its many years of service will live on this Sunday, September 13 when part of its bank account is used to pay for a community celebration in Coronation Park.

The special “Welcome To Wondai” afternoon is designed to allow new residents (and old ones) to meet all the different community groups that operate in Wondai and make new friends, as well as enjoy an inexpensive and relaxed afternoon of family fun.

The celebration will kick off at the Wondai Regional Art Gallery at 2:00pm with an hour-long “Songs Of Remembrance” concert jointly presented by the Wondai CWA & Community Choir and the Wondai State School Choir.

This gold coin donation concert will be followed by an afternoon tea.

Then at 3:30pm, popular local group The Stepping Stones will fire up their guitars on the Percy Iszlaub Sound Stage while visitors browse stalls set up in the park by local groups.

The Wondai Kindy will be running a BBQ to provide food and soft drinks, and the Wondai QCWA will have a stand to supply tea, coffee and cakes – both at everyday prices.

Children, meanwhile, can amuse themselves with a free jumping castle, pony rides and fairy floss.

At 4:00pm, a paper plane expert will teach anyone who wants to learn how to craft a perfect paper plane; and these lessons will be followed by a Paper Plane Flying Competition at 5:00pm to find the best students, with prizes for children and a prize for the best adult flier as well.

The competition is a prelude to an outdoor movie screening of the award-winning Australian comedy “Paper Planes”, which was a big hit at this year’s Heritage Bank Nanango Big Screen Film Festival.

The screening will begin at around 5:30pm, and guests should bring their own chairs or blankets.

Organiser Elaine Madill, from the Wondai Regional Art Gallery, said she’s looking forward to Sunday’s get-together.

“Wondai is a very friendly town and we’ve had a lot of new residents move here in the last few years,” she said.

“We hold community days like this about every two years to welcome our new residents and let them discover all the community groups and facilities Wondai offers.

“They’re usually very well attended, and this year we’ll be having an outdoor movie night to round things off which should be pretty popular, to judge by how well attended our Charlotte The Emu movie nights were.”

Anyone who’d like to mount a stall on Sunday should contact Elaine at the Gallery on 4168-5926.
