A 45-year-old Nanango man suffered injuries to his hand – but was lucky to escape further harm – when he narrowly avoided a collision with a ute on Saturday morning.

The rider, who sought treatment at Kingaroy Hospital, told police the ute driver probably had not seen him when he pulled out in front of him in Hazeldean Road, Nanango.

The motorbike swerved to avoid a collision but the rider clipped his hand on the back of the vehicle as he went by.

“However, he maintained control and didn’t drop the bike. He was very lucky,” Acting Senior Sergeant Jason Newton said.

The rider continued on to work, but colleagues convinced him to attend hospital.

A 21-year-old man has been charged with eight offences, including fraud, break-and-enter and stealing, in relation to a recent spate of credit card offences in Kingaroy.

Police will allege the man broke into a house, stole a credit card and then used it in a “tap and go” machine to purchase items without the need for a PIN number or signature.

The man has also been charged with shop stealing, receiving and failing to dispose of a syringe.

He will appear in Kingaroy Magistrates Court on March 30.

Acting Snr Sgt Newton said police investigations in relation to recent break-and-enters and credit card frauds in Kingaroy were continuing, and police expected more people would be charged.

Police from the Roadside Drug Testing Unit, the Road Policing Unit at Dalby as well as extra uniformed officers from Nanango, Cherbourg, Peranga, Chinchilla and Tara were on duty in Kingaroy for Saturday’s Wine and Food in the Park Festival and after-parties.

Acting Snr Sgt Newton said eight people had been charged with either public nuisance, public urination or various liquor offences.

They had attracted police attention both inside the Festival precinct and later in the night near licensed premises in town.

As well, the drug-testing unit detected five drugged drivers – who tested positive to either cannabis or methamphetamine. One was detected on Friday while the other four were tested on Saturday afternoon and evening.

Two drivers were charged with drink-driving.

Acting Snr Sgt Newton said police were disappointed with the level of public drunkenness on Saturday night.

“It only takes a bare minimum of people to sour an event. The vast majority went there, behaved themselves and had a good time,” he said.

“The biggest disappointment was the grossly intoxicated people leaving the Festival, especially young women who clearly had had too much to drink.”

He said police were so concerned they had called paramedics about 8:30pm to attend to two women who were vomiting in Haly Street.

“People need to take responsibility for their own actions and know when to stop pouring alcohol down their throats,” Acting Snr Sgt Newton said.

“And their friends should also give them a tap on the shoulder and tell them that they have had enough.”

Acting Snr Sgt Newton said more disturbances occurred later in the night near licensed premises.

A 33-year-old Nanango woman was charged after she urinated in the street in the full view of passers-by.
