Looking for ways to improve your picture taking?

On Sunday the Nanango and District Camera Club held their first monthly meeting for 2015, followed by a portrait workshop led by Nanango photographer Clive Lowe from clivelowephotography.com.au.

The club is planning many more workshops and demonstrations this year.

So if you’d like to learn more about taking great photos, come along to the St Patricks School library every third Sunday at 1:00pm.

In the meantime, here are some simple tips to improve your portraits:

  1. Keep your shoot simple. The more complex your scene, the harder to get that great shot
  2. Keep your backgrounds (and foregrounds) uncluttered
  3. Work with natural light where you can
  4. If you have to use artificial light, keep it simple and use as few lights as possible
  5. Be as prepared as possible before your subject arrives. If you’re shooting in a studio have your lighting ready and camera set up and ready to go. If you’re shooting on location, know where you want to shoot
  6. Have your camera’s settings ready to go and do a few test shots before your subject arrives
  7. Back lighting is a great way to shoot people – particularly when shooting outdoors. This adds interest, depth and sometimes colour to an image
  8. Lens hoods are a must if you’re doing this outside in bright environments, and you’ll need fill flash
