Lee Porter and Sherianne Talon would like to paint and photograph your favourite place in the South Burnett to help settle a debate that’s raged for more than a century: is photography really art?

The two Murgonites launched their “Dual Arts” project at this week’s CROW-FM community breakfasts which have been held in various South Burnett towns.

They want to settle a long-standing debate which has raged since the invention of the camera.

The pair intend to photograph and paint 20 unique South Burnett scenes or activities over the next few months, then mount a public exhibition of the results in August so everyone can cast a vote.

Lee Porter is a professional artist who has exhibited locally and nationally, as well as in New York and Milan.

In October this year, her painting of the view from Boat Mountain took out first prize in the annual South Burnett Art Competition and has now become part of Council’s permanent art collection.

Sherianne Talon is a professional photographer whose Talon Digital Imaging business is routinely engaged for portraiture, school formals, weddings and other commercial photographic assignments throughout the region. She has also won national and international awards for her work.

“This project is unique because it will not only allow the public to have a say about what scenes they think represent the South Burnett, but also engage in how the scenes have been interpreted,” Lee said.

“Although this debate has been around since the invention of the camera, a challenge or exhibition like this has never been staged anywhere in the world.”

The Dual Arts project also aims to attract tourists to the region.

Project co-ordinator Sandra Hoffman will be responsible for packaging tours to some of the South Burnett scenes and other local attractions when the exhibition is finished.

The project has set up a Facebook page where South Burnett residents can nominate favourite scenes or activities they would like to see captured on film and in paint.

Lee Porter and Sherianne Talon have also been distributing nomination forms at the community breakfasts.

  1. Great idea! Cannot wait for the debate to get the South Burnett on the map. There are lots of places to paint and visit – yahoo!
