Kay Lyons ... sentenced to jail

September 9, 2014

A Wattle Camp woman who pleaded guilty to attempted murder rather than face a second trial was today sentenced in the Brisbane Supreme Court to eight years’ jail.

Kay Te Atarangi Lyons, 55, opted to plead guilty after the jury was discharged in her first trial last month when they could not reach a verdict.

The Crown case was that Lyons had struck her husband, David, 67, on the head with a hammer “four or five times” while telling him she wanted him to die. The couple had been married for 37 years.

The Crown alleged the attack occurred after he discovered she had “maxed out” a credit card.

Justice Peter Lyons ordered that the 461 days Lyons had been held in custody be counted as time served.

Lyons will be eligible for parole on June 1, 2016.
