The Southern Cross Air Force (SCAF) invaded the South Burnett at the weekend but no blood was shed, and the strafing runs by the World War II fighters were the very model of a peaceful occupation.

The SCAF flyers are all members of various aeromodelling clubs who gather once a year with their warbirds for a special non-competitive fly-in at the Bill and Mary McLennan Model Airfield, located on the corner of a large cattle property at Booie.

The airfield is managed by the Kingaroy Aero Modellers Society (KAMS) which holds regular club events for its many local members at the mini airstrip.

More than 80 flyers took turns over the weekend to have their warbirds in the air.

The SCAF visit also coincided with KAMS’ Annual General Meeting on Sunday.

Elected for 2026-27 were:

  • President/Secretary/Registrar/PR: John Box
  • Vice-President: Robert Maughan
  • Treasurer/ Maintenance Co-ordinator: Darryl Dove
  • Safety Officer: Fran Sutherland
  • Training/Assessment and Assistant Safety Officer: Peter Somerfield
  • Members Representative/Canteen and Fun Fly event co-ordinator: Garry Jordan

A highlight of the weekend was a presentation at the SCAF dinner on Saturday night of a Certificate of Appreciation to Peter McLennan, acknowledging the support his late parents, Bill and Mary, had provided to KAMS for hosting the club over the past 38 years.

The dinner was held in the Anzac Room at the Kingaroy RSL CLub.
