An elderly man, injured in a riding accident west of Boondooma, was airlifted to hospital this morning by the RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter.

The man, aged in his 70s, fell from a horse at Hawkswood, suffering possible head and chest injuries.

The Sunshine Coast RACQ CareFlight Rescue crew was despatched to assist the man at 11:00am.

He was treated by ambulance officers and the CareFlight intensive care doctor on site, before being flown to the Bundaberg Hospital in a stable condition.

He was the fifth person injured in a horse-related accident that RACQ CareFlight Rescue has treated and transferred in less than two weeks.

“Horse injuries can be very serious,” CareFlight clinical director Dr Tim Harraway said.

“The potential speed, height and weight of the animal can cause serious spinal and head injuries.

“We urge people to wear helmets when riding.”
