A Yarraman police officer yesterday pulled over a drunk driver on the D’Aguilar Highway travelling at 179km/h.

A police spokesman said the policeman was using mobile radar at Gilla monitoring traffic travelling between Yarraman and Blackbutt.

About 4:30pm, the officer detected a Holden sedan travelling at 179km/h.

The driver was breath-tested when the car was pulled over, resulting in a positive roadside result.

A further breath analysis result of .074 BAC was later recorded.

The police spokesman said the male driver, who is a Canadian on a worker’s visa, was returning to the coast from Roma.

He told police he had stopped at a hotel during his travels and consumed two beers before driving on.

Whilst the police officer was at the roadside, another motorist stopped to complain fiercely about the driver overtaking him at such a speed.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Michael Keating, from the Road Policing Command, said he was pleased that the local officer stopped the irresponsible driver but said it was disappointing to see such dangerous behaviours on the roads during the busy holiday season.

“This is an example of what we do not want to see anywhere on a Queensland road. One of the fatal five behaviours is bad enough but a combination is absolutely dangerous and can be deadly,” Assistant Commissioner Keating said.
