Brian Fawcett with his niece Heather Houston, from Euroa in Victoria … raising funds to help beat cancer

November 25, 2013

About four years ago, Kumbia’s Brian Fawcett was sitting alone on his porch when he had, in his own words, “a spiritual experience” which changed his life forever, and potentially, the lives of hundreds of cancer sufferers.

Brian’s wife Shirley died from lymphoma 10 years ago.

As Brian was sitting on the porch, he felt an arm go around his shoulders and he felt “all warm” inside. Then he heard a whisper in his ear: “Now get up and do something”.

Roused into action, Brian started fundraising for cancer charities.

All up, he estimates he has raised $17,500 for the Leukaemia Foundation and $8000 for the Cancer Council since his “spiritual experience”.

His latest effort was a Shave For A Cure event for the Leukaemia Foundation held at the Kumbia Hotel on Saturday night.

Volunteers agreed to lose moustaches, beards, whole heads of hair or undergo a colour change all for a good cause.

This is the fourth annual “Shave For A Cure” that Brian has organised, three at the Kumbia Hotel and one in Kingaroy.

Last year the Kingaroy event raised about $6500.  Figures for the latest event are not yet finalised.

Money raised by the shaving and colouring “victims” on Saturday was supplemented by raffles and an auction of items donated for the night.

The night also featured live entertainment plus a barbecue dinner.
