A toddler is in a stable condition after surgery in the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane following a dog attack in Blackbutt this morning.

An ambulance spokesman said the two-year-old boy suffered serious head injuries in the incident, which occurred about 11:15am.

An RACQ CareFlight Rescue helicopter spokesman said the boy’s mother tried to shield her son, but the dogs then turned on her and she also suffered bite injuries.

The owner was attempting to restrain the dogs as the attack took place.

The three dogs – identified by CareFlight as American Bulldogs – attacked the child while he was visiting a friend’s property.

An ambulance crew transported the pair from the property to near the Blackbutt Showgrounds where the RACQ CareFlight helicopter was able to land.

Its flight doctor and intensive care paramedic treated the toddler for lacerations to his head, and his mother for injuries and puncture wounds to her shoulders and torso.

The toddler was airlifted to the Royal Children’s Hospital, and the mother to the Royal Brisbane Hospital; both were in a stable condition.
