Contractors have begun planting a “green screen” of native trees as the first stage of the development of a new Ergon Energy substation in Kingaroy.

Eco Homes and Gardens Kingaroy are planting 178 trees and developing a 4m wide garden which will run as a buffer zone along the length of the substation site.

Work began yesterday on the project and is expected to take a fortnight.

The new substation, which is necessary because of increased demand for electricity in Kingaroy, will be built on industrial land in River Road.

Construction of the actual substation is due to begin in 2018.
