Punters welcomed the return of Anzac Day racing to Wondai yesterday with a good crowd in the betting ring, and exciting racing on the track.

Even the horses seemed to be celebrating, with a new track record being set in Race 2.

Female jockeys took out nine of the placings on the five-race card.

Apprentice Ruby Ride had a strong day, with three placings plus a victory in the feature event, the Diggers Cup, on board Crazy Ways prepared by Nanango owner-trainer Barry Richardson.

Fellow Nanango trainer Anthony Greaves also had success in Race 3 with Lucstana.

The Fashions of the Field competition was also hotly contested.

Winners were:

  • Best Dressed Lady – Caroline Cavanagh, from Kingaroy
  • Best Dressed Man – Don Schmidhauser, from Hivesville
  • Best Dressed Couple – Mike and Andrea Stewart, from Mondure

A prize pack of products, donated by Alicia’s Spa and Hair Worx in Murgon, was presented as an encouragement award to Fashions of the Field entrant Brenda Johanson, from Proston, as a reward for  purchasing her entire outfit locally.
