Fashions of the Field winner Amanda Nixon, Kingaroy, and Sarah Pascoe, Brisbane, were enjoying the sunshine and racing at Wondai

October 21, 2012

An excellent crowd turned out at Wondai Racecourse on Saturday afternoon for the South Burnett Race Club’s premier event of the year, the Wondai Cup.

The weather was hot but so was the racing with the betting ring kept busy.

Popular Sunshine Coast jockey Jason Hoopert was victorious on the top-weight, Mimics, ahead of race favourite Harney.

Hoopert and Mimics have been a winning combination this year … at Goondiwindi in September and at Toowoomba in August.

Gladstone apprentice Joshua King also put in a strong performance, breaking his drought for the current season by bringing home the winner in Race 2, Spello, plus two seconds and a third.

Bundaberg trainer Darryl Gardiner was presented with the Dylan Dalton memorial prize for being the most successful trainer on the day; Gardiner trained the winner in Race 3, Twogundan, plus two seconds.

The meeting was also memorable for the Gary Popp-trained Fire Hazard which competed in both Race 3, where it came 4th, and in Race 5.

The 11-year-old gelding had different jockeys on board for its two races: Kelly Gates for its first run and Beau Appo in the last race.

It had to pass a vet check before it was allowed to go to the barrier for its second run. Unfortunately the double up – and the hot weather – probably proved too much, as it came home last.
