Mother's Day
Today is the second Sunday in May: Mother's Day. Different countries around the world celebrate Mother's Day on different days of the year because the event has many different origins. Some say Mother's Day first began in ancient Greece and emerged from a cult which was marked by the festival of Cybele (the mother of the gods) which was celebrated around Greece and the Greek colonies of Asia Minor, then later in Rome. In more modern times, Mother's Day began in the USA when it was copied from England by social activist Julia Ward Howe after the American Civil War as a call to unite women against all wars. But in Australia, the day simply celebrates motherhood and thanking our Mums. So if you'd like to give your own Mum a big "Thank You!" today, here's how you can do it:
Mother's Day High Teas - Nanango
SOLD OUT Treat mum to a Mother's Day High Tea at historic Ringsfield House, 41-45 Alfred Street, Nanango, today. There'll be sweet and savoury treats available plus tea and coffee. There's two sessions, 10:00am to noon; or 1:30pm to 3:30pm. Tickets are $25 per person (plus $5 for an optional glass of bubbly). Tickets can be booked online. Funds raised will go towards the preservation of Ringsfield House.
Mother's Day Lunch - Wondai
Dimities Cottage, at 49 Haly Street in Wondai, will be holding a special Mother's Day buffet from noon today. Cost is just $25 but bookings are essential. Phone chef Graham on (07) 4168-5744.
Mother's Day Lunch - Nanango
The Commercial Hotel at 69 Drayton Street, Nanango, has a special two-course menu on today for Mother's Day, accompanied by live music by Geoff Stephens. There will be two sittings: lunch from 11:00am to 2:00pm; and dinner from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. Cost is $35 per person. Phone the pub on (07) 4163-1208 to book a table.
Mother's Day Weekend - Linville

Mother's Day Lunch - Tingoora
The Tinny Pub on the highway at Tingoora will be spoiling mums with a mother's day lunch from noon to 2:00pm today. There'll be (07) 4168-5150 as places are limited!

The Australian Hotel at Murgon has put on a special all-day menu for Mother's Day with a choice of delicious mains and desserts. Places are limited, so to book phone the hotel on (07) 4168-1095.
Mother's Day Breakfast - Nanango
Nanango Services Club, at 24 Henry Street, has organised a special Mother's Day breakfast from 8:00am to 10:30am today. To book, phone the club on (07) 4163-1375.
Mother's Day Buffet - Wondai
The Hotel Cecil, in Mackenzie Street, Wondai, is putting on a special buffet breakfast this morning for Mother's Day. Adults are $18.50, children 6-12 $12.50 (Under 5s free). Bookings are not essential but would be preferred. Phone (07) 4137-7716.
Yarraman Wildhorse Campdraft
The third and final day of the Yarraman Wildhorse Campdraft will get under way at 7:00am today at the Yarraman Showgrounds on the New England Highway with the final of the Novice Draft, followed by the Junior and Juvenile drafts. A bar and a canteen will be running all weekend. Camping is available on site (only unpowered sites). Entry for spectators is free, and everyone is welcome!
Community Pickleball - Woolooga
Woolooga Community Hall is hosting community pickleball every Sunday from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the hall at 8 Thomas Street, Woolooga. Everyone is welcome to come along, including beginners. All equipment is provided at the court, so just bring water!
Murgon Sunday Markets
The monthly Murgon Markets will be held in Lamb Street in the heart of Murgon from 7:00am until about 12:00 noon today. The markets run on the second Sunday of each month and offer locally made crafts, foods and produce - always an interesting Sunday morning out. New stallholders are always welcome too! More details? Kumbia Museum
The Kumbia and District Historical Society's museum, located in the Federation Heritage Centre behind Kumbia Hall in Bell Street, will be open from 1:30pm to 3:30pm this afternoon. Kilkivan Campdraft
The Kilkivan Show and Campdraft Association will be running the annual Kilkivan Campdraft this weekend at Kilkivan Showgrounds in Mudlo Road. Today's action will kick off at 6:30am with the Alan Hope Memorial Novice Draft, followed by a junior working cattle and then a juvenile draft. There'll also be a bar in operation and hot meals available on site, as well as camp sites if you want to stay over. Admission is free for spectators and everyone is welcome.
Free Sunday Lunch - Kingaroy
A free community lunch is available every Sunday from 12:30pm to 1:30pm at The Old Railway Station building, O'Neill Square, in Kingaroy. The Community Serving Community Meals Project is co-ordinated by the South Burnett Support Alliance and relies on volunteers from the local community.
