Despite big hopes at the end of last season that 2024 might be “their year”, the South Burnett Thrashers rugby union team won’t be hitting the field.

Club president Jamie Shirlaw made the sad announcement this week that the team won’t be a part of this year’s Darling Downs competition.

“The Thrashers regretfully announce their withdrawal from the 2024 season,” Jamie said.

“We thank everyone for their support during our brief return to competition.

“This is but a temporary break as we regroup and regrow the club.”

The club previously folded in 2014 due to a shortage of players but came back to life in 2022 in the Darling Downs C Grade competition.

They were shifted up to B Grade for the 2023 season and made it through to the Preliminary Final before going down to Goondiwindi.

A lack of players is believed to be behind the decision to withdraw from the 2024 competition, where they had again been pencilled in for B Grade.
