ASIST is a two-day workshop that teaches participants how to intervene and save a life from suicide

March 29, 2016

A two-day workshop will be held in Blackbutt later this year which could just save someone’s life one day.

The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) program has been organised by Rural and Remote Mental Health as part of its “Rural Minds” project.

The training aims to teach participants how to intervene to save a life.

No prior training is needed to attend the program, just a willingness to make a difference – whether it be with family members, friends, workmates or in formal care-giving roles.

Participants will learn to:

  • Understand the ways personal and societal attitudes affect views on suicide and interventions
  • Provide guidance and suicide first aid to a person at risk in ways that meet their individual safety needs
  • Identify the key elements of an effective suicide safety plan and the actions required to implement it
  • Appreciate the value of improving and integrating suicide prevention resources in the community at large
  • Recognise other important aspects of suicide prevention, including life-promotion and self-care

The two-day training usually costs $450 (plus GST)  per person, but this has been cut to $150 (plus GST) as the program has been sponsored by the Federal Government’s National Suicide Prevention Strategy.

Eleven people have already booked in for the training, which will be held on July 12-13, and organisers need just three more bookings to ensure the program goes ahead.

The fee covers all catering and materials.
