FLASHBACK: Graduating students arrive at Kingaroy Town Hall for the school’s annual formal last November; like all local schools, 2015 marked a year of improved educational outcomes

February 23, 2016

Year 12 results from the graduating class of 2015 were released this week and the report card reveals some interesting trends, according to Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ).

Of the record 50,019 Queensland students who finished Year 12 in 2015, 47,202 received a Queensland Certificate of Education – a 19 percent increase since 2011.

However, at the same time the percentage of students who were eligible for an Overall Position (OP) has continued to decline with 50.5 percent of the 2015 Year 12 graduates eligible for an OP, down from 55 percent in 2011.

The comprehensive school data is contained in the Year 12 Outcomes 2015 report released today by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA).

ISQ Executive Director David Robertson said the report showed 31,308 students from 461 schools received a Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification in 2015.

“Interestingly since 2011 there has been an 85 percent increase in the number of students completing the more advanced Certificate III qualification – 9765 students in 2015 compared with 5274 in 2011,” Mr Robertson said.

“The report also showed a 77 percent increase in students awarded a Certificate IV qualification between 2011 and 2015,” he said.

The Year 12 Outcomes 2015 report also revealed:

  • 709 students received an OP 1 – or 2.75 percent of eligible students
  • 5276 students received an OP between 1 and 5 – or 20.5 percent of eligible students; and
  • 744 students with learning impairments or difficulties received a Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement – a 13 percent increase on 2011

Mr Robertson congratulated Queensland independent schools on their student’s achievements.

“Schools, parents and students should feel rightly proud of their accomplishments,” he said.

“However, it’s important to remember that these results, whether it’s OP scores or VET qualifications, represent just one piece of information in a very broad and rich picture of a school.” .

Mr Robertson said 2018 would be the final year OPs would be reported with a new senior assessment and tertiary entrance system currently under development.

The Year 12 Outcomes 2015 report and associated regional reports can be found on the QCAA website.

How Our Region’s High Schools Performed In 2015

Key:

  • SEP: The number of students who received a Senior Education Profile (SEP). The SEP may include a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Tertiary Entrance (TE) Statement, a Senior Statement or a Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA).
  • QCE: The number of students who were awarded a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) at the end of Year 12. QCEs were awarded to students who attained 20 credits by achieving a Sound Achievement or pass in the required pattern. Their program of studies must have included a minimum of 12 credits from core courses and 8 credits from any combination of other courses of study. To be awarded a QCE, students must also have met literacy and numeric requirements
  • QCIA: The number of students awarded a QCIA. These students have engaged in a highly individualised learning program for their senior phase of schooling. Students may receive a Senior Statement and a QCIA
  • VET: The number of students awarded one or more vocational education and training (VET) qualifications. This includes qualifications of Certificate I, II, III, IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma. Students who are completing or completed a SAT are also included in this column
  • SAT: The number of students who are completing or have completed a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship (SAT)
  • OP: The number of students who received an Overall Position (OP). To receive an OP a student must study 20 semester units of credit in QCAA-approved subjects with at least three subjects taken for four semesters. Students must also complete Year 12 and sit the Queensland Core Skills Test.
  • SSO: The number of students who completed Year 12 and received a statement of results (Senior Statement) but did not qualify for a QCE, QCIA, VET qualification (including students who participated in a SAT), OP or IBD.
  • IBD: The number of students awarded an International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD)
  • % with a QCE, VET, SAT or IBD: The percentage of Year 12 students who were awarded at least one of the following: QCE, VET (including students who participated in a SAT), IBD.
  • % QTAC applicants with a tertiary offer: The percentage of students who applied for and received an offer of a tertiary place through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). The percentage of students entering VET courses through QTAC is understated because QTAC data on VET includes only full-time students entering a VET diploma. The data does not include part-time diplomas, certificates, apprenticeships or traineeships.
