A man who threw a glass bottle towards police, which smashed with shards striking an officer on the leg, was fined $1000 when he appeared in Kingaroy Magistrates Court on Monday.

Shawn Hanly, 31, pleaded guilty to serious assault of a police officer.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Kym Scott said police had been called to a noise complaint in Campbell Street, Kingaroy, on February 5.

When police began to arrest a man at the scene, Hanly threw the bottle.

Solicitor Chris Campbell said Hanly had Asperger Syndrome and required some assistance from his mother. He usually did not drink alcohol but on this occasion had been drinking with a friend.

Mr Campbell said Hanly had thrown the bottle because he believed his friend was being hurt, and threw the bottle “to get the attention of police”.

Magistrate Barry Barrett said Hanly had involved himself in something that had nothing to do with him, had made the police officer’s job more difficult and put his welfare at risk.

Hanly was fined $1000 and a conviction was recorded.
