Kingaroy’s Mick Smallwood takes on the Caloundra defenders

March 23, 2015

The pre-season action for South Burnett rugby league teams continued on Saturday with visiting teams from Caloundra and Caboolture giving local players a major work-out in the heat.

At Kingaroy, Caloundra was triumphant in all three games but they didn’t always have it their own way.

In the first A Grade game, Caloundra took off to an unbeatable lead in the first quarter but the Murgon Mustangs did well to hold them back from a cricket score.

Jameel Sullivan demonstrated his class by scoring two tries.

In the second A Grade game, played under lights, Kingaroy put its first points on the board via Mick Smallwood with six minutes to go in the first half. At halftime, the Sharks – who were last year’s Sunshine Coast A Grade and Reserve Grade premiers – led 20-6.

With the score at 40-6, Shane Cliff managed to barge through the Sharks’ defence to ground the ball over the line. Mitch Crossley’s conversion was again on target, and the score was 40-12.

Caloundra extended its lead to 50-12, but the Red Ants didn’t give up and with less than a minute on the clock, Mick Smallwood got over the line again, only to be held up.

The Red Ants were starved of possession all night but like the earlier Murgon game, they will benefit from the “friendly workout” ahead of the main season.

At Nanango, the U18s Stags side was triumphant over the visitors, defeating Caboolture 6-0.
