A woman who threw a pot of boiling water over another woman, causing burns to 10 per cent of her body, has been sentenced to two years jail after pleading guilty to a charge of assault causing grievous bodily harm.

Krystal Susan Saunders, 25, faced the District Court in Kingaroy on Friday for sentencing.

The court was told the complainant confronted Saunders at a house in Barambah Avenue, Cherbourg, on August 11 last year about an alleged altercation with her sister, before punching her in the mouth.

The two women then exchanged blows, moving from the dining room into the kitchen.

At one point Saunders grabbed a jaffle iron and tried to hit the complainant but someone disarmed her.

Saunders then ended up on the ground and the complainant thought the fight was over.

However Saunders stood up and grabbed a pot of boiling water – which was being used to cook silverside – off the stove and threw the water over the complainant’s chest, shoulders, back and arms.

The injured woman went next door and had a cold shower before being taken to Cherbourg Hospital. She was then transferred to the Royal Brisbane Hospital’s burns unit.

She was in hospital for nine days and has been left with significant scars.

Judge Gary Long ruled that the 75 days that Saunders had been held in custody should be counted as time served and ordered that she be immediately released on parole.
