They may only be small, but Kingaroy Hospital’s latest gifts are not only worth big dollars, their value is going to be priceless to local mums and their bubs.

Kingaroy Hospital Women’s and Children’s Service presented representatives from Hitachi Machinery Company with a thank you plaque on Friday for the donation of two Masimo Monitors and a Jaundice Meter to the service.

The Jaundice Meter – the small device being held at the right in the top photo – is worth $10,000 but is worth every cent.

Acting Nurse Unit Manager Annelle Bradley said the device would allow staff to monitor jaundice in new-born babies by non-invasive methods, ie reducing the need for blood tests.

“The machine is also portable which is especially handy given our location and the number of home visits we do with mums and bubs in the South Burnett,” she said.

The two Masimo Monitors, worth a total of $18,000, are used to measure vital signs in babies.

“They provide quick and reliable assessment of pulse, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation,” Ms Bradley said.

“Again they’re a portable device so they will be adaptable to a variety of care environments.”

Hitachi staff conducted various activities to raise the money for the equipment which was donated via the Humpty Dumpty Foundation
