Science guru Dr Karl Kruszelnicki “Skyped” into St Mary’s Catholic College today for a Science Question and Answer session with students from Years 2-12.

The session was organised by principal Mr Michael Nayler who regularly listens to Dr Karls’ JJJ podcasts in which Dr Karl had offered to do a Q&A session with any Australian school.

Students were invited to submit their best science questions for Dr Karl and out of the 60 questions submitted, the best 20 were chosen for the Q&A session.

These questions varied from: “How do birds fly?” through to “If dark matter is invisible, how do we know that it exists?”

One of Dr Karl’s most interesting answers came to Cherry Martoo’s (Year 2) question: “Why is the grass green?”.

Dr Karl explained that plants being green was because they had evolved from a second generation plant species that had previously been in the ocean that and relied on reflecting the green light as they used the other colours in the spectrum which could penetrate to reach them.

He explained that the first generation of land plants would have relied on using the Sun’s green light, rather than reflecting it, and were bluey-purple instead.

St Mary’s College captains Gabe Crane and Cassie Firman led the interactive session with Dr Karl and said that they were amazed by not only the great questions from the younger students, but also Dr Karl’s many intriguing answers.

At the end of his Q&A session, Dr Karl kindly offered to send copies of some of his books to St Mary’s for the library.

Mr Nayler said he was very grateful for Dr Karl’s incredible generosity in sharing his great passion for science with his students.
