A possum has been blamed for a blackout that left about 1700 Ergon Energy customers in Kingaroy without power for about two hours last night.

The soon-to-be ex-marsupial came into contact with live wires about 7:26pm, causing automatic protection systems to cut in.

Ergon crews were despatched to find the culprit and check the network.

An Ergon Energy spokesman said power was restored progressively to sections of the line and was fully reinstated about 9:30pm.
