Round 2 of the Evolution Solar South Burnett football competition was completed on Tuesday evening in Kingaroy with the 1st Division match between Gunners and Nanango.

This was the first time the teams have met since last year’s 1st Division Grand Final.

While Nanango have had a reasonably stable squad, Gunners have had to rebuild after losing many players in the off season.

The match started out fairly evenly, but it was Nanango that produced the more attacking play while Gunners defended defiantly.

The first half  produced the best football seen so far this season. While Nanango launched many attacks, the Gunners’ defence held and on many occasions broke out quickly into a counter attack.

At half-time the scores were locked at nil-all.

Nanango came close to scoring in the 50th minute when a Kieran Askin missile was tipped over the crossbar by Gunners’ keeper Hayden Mashford.

Five minutes later Askin had another shot and again the Gunners’ keeper denied him.

However from the ensuing corner kick, Kyron Tunstall made no mistake to give Nanango the lead.

The goal opened the game up and both teams chanced their arm.

In the 67th minute, straight after coming on as a substitute, Damien Corson doubled Nanango’s lead, scoring off a corner kick.

Gunners never let their heads drop and continued to launch counter attacks, but Jeff Frohloff held and his defence was not really troubled too much.

There is no denying Nanango will be hard to beat this season.

Kieran Askin and Kieran Mangan were strong in the midfield and Jeff Frohloff in defence.

Hayden Mashford had a brilliant game in goal and the score could have been a lot worse for Gunners if not for his brave display between the sticks.

Mitch Potter and Darren Moseling had strong games, particularly in the first half keeping Nanango scoreless.

Nanango 2 (Kyron Tunstall 57th, Damien Corson 67th) defeated Gunners 0.
