South Burnett bird lovers now have a new club – and clubhouse – to gather together, swap tips and share their love of all things avian.

The South Burnett Aviculture Society officially opened their new clubhouse at the Kingaroy Showgrounds on Sunday.

It is located in one of the small sheds opposite the poultry pavilion.

The aim of the club, which was formed last year, is to promote aviculture in the South Burnett.

Members own and/or breed parrots, quail, doves … in fact, all sorts of birds.

President Darryl Austin, from Kingaroy, said the club already had 22 members and was growing.

“We will be displaying birds at this year’s Kingaroy Show,” he said.

Mr Austin said the club would like to thank the South Burnett Show Society for donating the use of the shed.

Club members will now meet on the first Sunday of every month from 2:00pm at the shed.

They also plan to host a number of special displays at the venue throughout the year.

The club celebrated the official opening of their clubhouse with an Open Day on Sunday which featured displays of birds, market stalls and vehicles from the South Burnett Gas Guzzlers club.

Craig Lucas, from Cee-Jay’s Music, provided the entertainment.

Mr Austin said between 50 and 60 people had dropped by which was “not a bad start”.
