A large grass fire burning in remote country near Elgin Vale is now burning safely within containment lines.

Firefighters were called to the scene about 1:30pm on Tuesday after smoke was seen by a fire spotter aircraft.

Local landholders and Queensland Parks and Wildlife staff joined urban and rural brigades at the scene to control the fire, which was burning on three fronts.

Smoke in the Wondai area this afternoon came from back-burning in the forestry area east of Charlestown.

This fire was first reported to emergency services on Saturday and has since been controlled within containment lines which have been strengthened by the back-burning.

Fire crews spent the day mopping up and monitoring the area.
