Another way of sorting the data … a comparison between some South Burnett towns

June 27, 2013

The Queensland Police Service today launched a new crime statistics website which allows the public to identify crime hotspots in the State, check what offences have occurred  (down to individual street level), and compare police clear-up rates.

The online crime statistics portal, part of the State Government’s open data direction,  allows visitors to search via town or postcode, shire, or police region.

Results can be filtered by offence type, eg robbery, arson, unlawful entry etc.

They can also be aggregated to produce comparison maps between towns or regions.

Statistics from the past 13 years are available to be searched.

For privacy reasons, the actual location of domestic violence incidents and sexual crimes are not displayed but are included in regular monthly statistics.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said the initiative could encourage people to be more vigilant and could also encourage people who may have seen something in their area to contact police.

He said the website would provide up-to-date information to the public, however there is a lag of about a week after a crime occurs before it is logged onto the website.
