About 180 students from eight local schools gathered at Kingaroy State High School on Thursday to test their science skills in the annual University of Newcastle Science and Engineering challenge.

The students, under the watchful eyes of their teachers and local community volunteers, took part in a number of challenges designed to test their understanding of various scientific principles.

They constructed vehicles, measured string, built bridges and generally had a lot of fun while putting their theoretical knowledge to practical test.

The students came from State high schools at Kingaroy, Murgon, Nanango, Goomeri, Proston, Yarraman, Wondai and Toogoolawah.

The school which accumulated the most points overall was Nanango State High School, who repeated their success from 2012.
