The skimming device sits in front of the usual ATM slot; the red arrow shows the tiny camera

Police are warning people to be vigilant when using ATMs after two skimming devices were located in Brisbane at the weekend.

The skimming device, pictured above, is used to steal and use identification data from bank cards.

This information can be used in various ways to take money from the customer’s account.

The skimming device is a cover plate placed over the original card entry. A small camera (the tiny dot to the bottom left side of the device) records the PIN number as it is input.

Police believe they have retrieved all the information data obtained by the skimming devices at the weekend and the security of the credit card details has not been compromised.

However they have reminded the public to be vigilant when using automatic teller machines and use simple security actions such as covering your hand when entering your PIN.

  • Anyone who believes they have located a skimming device on an ATM should contact their local police station or Crime Stoppers on 1800-333-000.

UPDATE November 27, 2012 – Police are investigating after a device, believed to be a card skimmer, was located on an ATM at Mermaid Waters today.

“We are urging everyone who has recently used an ATM at the shopping centre to check their statements for any unusual activity,” Detective Inspector Brian Swan, Southern Investigative Group, said.

“This is a reminder to the public of the need to be vigilant when using these machines. Simple security precautions such as covering the keypad when entering your PIN can help protect the security of your account.”
