South Burnett Regional Council has announced that nominations are now open for the region’s 2013 Australia Day Awards.

The awards provide the community with an opportunity to acknowledge and reward outstanding groups and individuals committed to improving the lifestyle experienced in our region.

A Council spokesman said some of the award categories have changed this year to give individual communities an equal opportunity to nominate those who have made special contributions.

Award categories are as follows:

  • South Burnett Citizen of the Year – To be presented to a citizen who has made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and has given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years. To be eligible, the person must be 25 years of age or older as at January 26, 2013.
  • South Burnett Young Citizen of the Year – To be presented to a young citizen who has made a noteworthy contribution during the current year and has given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years. To be eligible, the person must be under the age of 25 years as at January 26, 2013.
  • South Burnett Community Organisation of the Year – To be presented to the organisation which has made an outstanding contribution to the community during the current year and has given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years.
  • South Burnett Lifetime Achievement Award – To be presented to a senior citizen in the region who has given outstanding service to the local community over a number of years; the person must be 60 years of age or older as at January 26, 2013.
  • South Burnett Volunteer of the Year – This award is presented to a citizen who has made a noteworthy contribution through their volunteer work during the current year and have given outstanding volunteer services to the local community over a number of years. Open to all ages.
  • South Burnett Cultural Award – To be presented to a person who has made a noteworthy contribution to the cultural life of the region or an outstanding achievement in cultural activities. Open to all ages.
  • Local Achiever Award– These awards be to presented to persons who have made an outstanding achievement in their local community. Open to all ages: Blackbutt/Benarkin – Nanango – Wondai/Tingoora – Maidenwell/Bunya Mountains – Kingaroy – Murgon – Kumbia – Wooroolin/Memerambi – Hivesville/Proston – Other rural areas (nominate which area)
  • South Burnett Junior Sportsperson of the Year– To be eligible the person must be no more than 18 years of age as at January 26, 2013
  • South Burnett Sportsperson of the Year – To be eligible the person must be 18 years of age as at January 26, 2013

The regional awards ceremony will be held on the eve of Australia Day, ie Friday January 25, at the Blackbutt Memorial Hall.
