Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott wants to run for the seat again

Senator Barnaby Joyce today bowed out of a potential fight with Member for Maranoa Bruce Scott after Mr Scott announced he was standing for preselection in the seat, which he’s held since March 1990.

Last month the Senator told southburnett.com.au that while he refused to absolutely rule out challenging for the seat, he would only do so if Mr Scott decided to retire, or if another LNP member decided to enter the preselection process.

Otherwise, Mr Joyce said, he would “consult with Maranoa voters” before deciding whether to throw his hat in the ring.

Today Mr Scott said he’d received “very strong support across the electorate” to continue in his role.

“I’m absolutely committed to getting the best for the electorate and will do everything I can for a change in government in Canberra,” he said.

This afternoon Senator Joyce released a statement saying he had decided not to run for preselection against Mr Scott.

“For the best interests of western Queensland, and its task within the common purpose of the nation, I believe an internal campaign would be an unnecessary distraction within sight of a federal election,” he said.

“For the purpose of unity in the Nationals and the LNP teams, I endorse the Honourable Bruce Scott to be re-elected as the member for Maranoa and wish him all the best in his continued political career.”

There had been speculation Senator Joyce wanted a Lower House seat so he could challenge Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss to become leader of the Nationals – and Deputy Prime Minister – if the Coalition wins the next Federal election.

In his statement, Senator Joyce apologised for “any disappointments that may be held at this time”.

“Without dispute, the current polls are narrowing and the forthcoming federal election will be a very tightly run race,” he said.

“I am genuinely and deeply concerned about the financial future of our nation if we are encumbered with a further three years of the current management.”
