The South Burnett Regional Council has awarded Brisbane-based Civil Mining and Construction Pty Ltd a $22 million contract to restore flood-damaged roads in the region.

The reconstruction and rehabilitation works will be on sealed and unsealed roads, cross-road culverts and floodways at over 1000 individual sites on 233 roads.

A Council spokesman said high priority works were also continuing through the direct engagement of several local contractors.

So far 12 urgent projects had been completed and another nine were underway or due to start soon.

“Negotiation and agreement of the contract arrangements has taken place to ensure the best value for money outcome for the community,” Council CEO Mr Ken McLoughlin said.

“A key component of those negotiations has been the involvement of local contractors and suppliers. The program of works is expected to take approximately nine months to complete depending upon the weather.”

The contractors will commence detailed inspections and planning of the works by the end of this month nd start moving crews in to commence works by mid-May.

Funding submissions for the remaining works have been lodged with the Queensland Reconstruction Authority and Council is anticipating that approvals will be granted in time for the release of a second major contract in July 2012.

This second contract will be worth about $25 million.

Mr McLoughlin said a close watch was being kept on the condition of roads and if necessary temporary holding works would be carried out to keep them safe until the final works were completed.

The target completion date for all works is June 30, 2013.

Mr McLoughlin said Council would be working with the contractors to ensure that every effort is made to complete the works on schedule.
