78th Annual Blackbutt Show
The 78th Annual Blackbutt Show will be held at the Blackbutt Showgrounds in Hart Street, Blackbutt from early this morning until late tonight. This year's Show will feature a full range of horse events (anything from led breed and ridden breed through to hacks and rider classes). There'll also be a big roll-up of stud cattle and poultry; the popular woodchop and sawing competitions; lots of ring events; post ripping; wool spinning demonstrations and a Ute Muster too. As usual, the Show will also feature a great spread of pavilion exhibits; a new sideshow alley; showbags; cooking demonstrations by South Burnett chef Jason Ford; and trade displays too. There'll also be a Bull and Bronco Rodeo at 5:30pm along with a Woolly Jumbuck Ride. Then from 8:00pm until around midnight, popular country rock performer Arthur Nettelfield will be taking to the main stage for a great night of toe-tapping entertainment under the stars. The 2012 Show will be officially opened at 2:00pm by a surprise guest and admission this year is still just $12.00 for adults, $10.00 for pensioners with a card and high school students (children under 12 are admitted free). More details? Contact Show Society secretary Lynette Argent on (07) 4163-0999 or (0428) 908-334 or email her

Queensland Local Government Elections
The 2012 Queensland Local Government elections will be held today, and South Burnett residents will go to the polls to elect Mayors and Councillors for the Gympie, South Burnett and Toowoomba Regional Shire Councils, depending on where they live. Today's elections are the first since the Bligh Government's forced council mergers in 2008 and they'll give voters the chance to express their views about how things have turned out. Readers in the Gympie and Toowoomba Regional Council areas will all have to turn out and vote today (voting is compulsory) but roughly half of South Burnett Regional Council voters don't have to vote because three of the Council's six divisions are uncontested. You can get our handy guide to the 2012 Council elections on this page of our website. And you'll find the results of today's elections on our front page as soon as they're announced.
RSPCA Fundraiser Dinner - Kingaroy
Accents Restaurant and Cafe at 30 Alford Street, Kingaroy, is hosting a special fundraising dinner from 6:00pm this evening to help support the Kingaroy RSPCA shelter. Rumours - Nanango
The Nanango Theatre Company will be presenting the fourth performance of their latest production "Rumours" (a Neil Simon farce) at the Nanango Theatre Company Playhouse at the corner of Elk and George Streets, Nanango at 7:00pm this evening (plays begins at 7:30pm sharp). Rumours tells the story of several affluent couples who gather together for a dinner party celebrating their hosts' tenth anniversary. However, they discover there are no servants, the hostess is missing, and the host - the deputy mayor of New York - has shot himself through the earlobe. Comic complications arise when - given everyone's upper class status - they decide they need to do everything possible to conceal the evening's events from the local police and the media. Tonight's show is a supper night and will continue until around 10:00pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and pensioners (or $15 and $10 if you book and pay 7 days in advance). More details and/or bookings? Phone In Gear in Fitzroy Street, Nanango on (07) 4163-3582. Some tickets will be available at the door as well. [Note: Two additional performances will be held at the same time and venue on May 4th and 5th]

South Burnett Ruby League
The 3rd Round of the South Burnett Premier League will be played this weekend with a massive triple header at Kingaroy's T.J. O'Neill Oval in Youngman Street.
