2012 Wondai Autumn Garden Expo
The first day of the weekend long 2012 Wondai Autumn Garden Expo will be held at the Wondai Sports Grounds off the Bunya Highway just north of the Wondai CBD from 8:00am this morning through until 5:00pm this afternoon. The Expo - now in its 19th year - has become one of the South Burnett's signature annual events as well as one of the largest gardening shows of its type in south-east Queensland, and it always draws thousands of keen gardeners to Wondai every April. And this year (for the third year running) it's being held in conjunction with the South Burnett Orchid Society's Annual Show, which will be staged at the nearby Wondai Diggers Club in Mackenzie Street, Wondai from 9:30am to around 3:00pm today - so make sure you check out both venues! As well as the usual enormous range of plant and garden-related product displays, the Expo will also feature a number of interesting and well-informed guest speakers talking on a variety of gardening topics throughout the day. Attendees can also get to enjoy a brilliant Flower Show and live entertainment from the popular Stolzenberg Brothers with their toe-tapplig brand of classic country and rock music. There'll also be plenty of food and drink outlets dotted around the grounds too. Admission to this year's Garden Expo is a slim $4 (young people under 15 can get in for free if accompanied by an adult) and you can get more details and/or book a stand of your own on the Garden Expo's web site or by phoning Fran on (07) 4168-5870 (or email her) or Carol on (07) 4168-5717. Visitors coming to Wondai for the weekend can also obtain helpful assistance from the South Burnett Visitor Information Centre - Wondai by phoning (07) 4168-5652 or by emailing them. The Expo is jointly organised by the Wondai Lions Club and the Wondai & Districts Garden Club and was the winner of the 2006 Regional Festivals and Events category in the prestigious Fraser Coast South Burnett Tourism Awards for Excellence. Come along today and see why!
Rumours - Nanango
The Nanango Theatre Company will be presenting the second performance of their latest production "Rumours" (a Neil Simon farce) at the Nanango Theatre Company Playhouse at the corner of Elk and George Streets, Nanango at 7:00pm this evening (plays begins at 7:30pm sharp). Rumours tells the story of several affluent couples who gather together for a dinner party celebrating their hosts' tenth anniversary. However, they discover there are no servants, the hostess is missing, and the host - the deputy mayor of New York - has shot himself through the earlobe. Comic complications arise when - given everyone's upper class status - they decide they need to do everything possible to conceal the evening's events from the local police and the media. Tonight's show is a supper night and will continue until around 10:00pm. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and pensioners (or $15 and $10 if you book and pay 7 days in advance). More details and/or bookings? Phone In Gear in Fitzroy Street, Nanango on (07) 4163-3582. Some tickets will be available at the door as well. [Note: Four additional performances will be held at the same time and venue on April 27th and 28th and May 4th and 5th]
50th Anniversary Golden Spurs Campdraft - Proston
The first day of the weekend-long 50th Anniversary Golden Spurs Campdraft will get underway at the Proston Sportsground the Proston-Boondooma Road at the edge of town from 6:30am this morning. This weekend's campdraft marks the occasion in 1963 when the campdraft moved to its new location at the Proston Sportsground and took on the Golden Spurs name (previous campdrafts had been held on what is now the town's golf course) - and to celebrate the occasion, a number of special features have been added this year. They include a special display of historic Golden Spurs memorabilia in the Sportsground Hall which will open at 6:00pm this evening; and a special “Invitational Draft” for former Golden Spurs winners that will begin this morning and will be decided at around 3:00pm this afternoon. More than 565 first round nominations have been received for this year's campdraft (including 40 from past winners) and if you're a campdrafting fan, this looks like being a really great weekend out. Admission to the campdraft and the historic display is 100% free for spectators and everyone is welcome. You can read more about this weekend's draft on this page of our website.
