Karyn Bjelke-Petersen has been appointed principal at St John’s Lutheran School in Kingaroy after serving as joint acting principal for several months.

A letter to parents from School Council chairman Warren Layt on Tuesday confirmed that Mrs Bjelke-Petersen would officially take over the role on July 1.

“Karyn has been a long-term staff member and Assistant Principal of St John’s Lutheran School for many years,” Mr Layt wrote.

“She has been a parent at the school and held various positions on our P&F since 1996 until her commencement of employment here in 2007.

“She is a valued and well-respected member within our community and has extensive experience and a great passion for the school and Lutheran Education.”

Long-serving St John’s Lutheran School principal Helen Folker announced earlier this year that she would be retiring.

Mrs Folker – who was one of the school’s two founding teachers in 1989 – began long service leave in April ahead of her official departure.

She was appointed principal in 2000.

Mrs Folker said at the time that after 30 years of teaching and leadership it was time for someone new to take the helm.

“Being principal of this school has been a wonderful privilege and an amazing opportunity,” she said.

Retiring St John’s principal Helen Folker was surrounded by past and present members of the school’s board when she cut the cake at the school’s 30th anniversary celebrations in April
