A funeral service will be held on Thursday (November 22) for the former “first lady” of Wondai Shire, Alison Iszlaub.

Alison, 82, died peacefully on November 14 after a long illness.

She was the wife of long-serving Wondai Mayor Percy Iszlaub, who died in February.

The couple would have celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary in October.

Alison met Percy at the Wondai Show Ball; they married on October 18, 1968, and had two children, Jane and Leigh.

Her hard work in the community ensured Alison became a Wondai icon in her own right.

It was her tenacity and vision which made the Wondai Art Gallery a reality.

Alison was the founder and curator of the gallery for many years and in 2012, the main exhibition space was re-named in her honour.

Alison was also a founding member, and later patron, of South Burnett Arts Inc, a not-for-profit association established to encourage arts in the region.

Her funeral will be held from 10:30am on Thursday at St Mary’s Anglican Church in Baynes Street, Wondai, to be followed by interment at the Wondai Lawn Cemetery.

She is survived by her two children, three grandchildren and brother, Graham Munro.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be considered for the Wondai Art Gallery (envelopes will be provided at the service).

  1. Alison Iszlaub was a visionary 20 years ahead of her time. As stated above, without Alison there would no Art Gallery in Wondai. It was her persistence and tenacity that saw the Wondai Council have no choice but to allocate funds “for the Arts”, something that was not done by a small rural Council in Queensland 30 years ago. Her list of achievements are many, but she will always be remembered for her stance on equality and human compassion for all.

The town spirit that epitomises the Wondai Region did not just happen automatically, it is driven by the great people of the town and was led by Percy and Alison.

Now that she has joined Perc, I am sure they will make Heaven a better place, too!!
