Maidenwell was buzzing at the weekend for the town’s inaugural Post Rip Challenge, an event which grew out of last year’s woodchop / postripping charity fundraiser.

The LifeFlight helicopter rescue service was again the beneficiary of the weekend as well as the Maidenwell Community Group.

Last year’s event raised $15,000 for LifeFlight and organising committee member Bronwyn Spencer said this was the target again for this year – and she’s confident they’ll be able to hand over at least that amount.

It was also a fundraiser for Tanduringie State School P&C, which organised the canteen.

Some of Australia’s best chainsaw racers camped over at the Maidenwell Sportsgrounds for the weekend.

It was a real community effort for the town.

Dinner on Saturday night was at the Maidenwell Hall, catered for by John Whitley and Nigel Squibb from the Maidenwell Trading Post.

Rain disrupted the competition – although no one was complaining! – causing events to run later than scheduled.

The highlight of the weekend was the 090 Australian Title Rip, held on Sunday.

Winner was Wayne Donovan, from Crows Nest, who also took out the Jack and Jill with his wife Teresa.

The pair have dominated Jack and Jill competitions across Australia for many years, winning multiple Australian titles.

There were also categories for local competitors, with Maidenwell’s Darryl Adams taking out the Local Rip, and Dean Cullen and Kathryn Kidman winning the Local Jack and Jill.

Bronwyn said the event would definitely be going ahead again next year, with another $15,000 fundraising target for LifeFlight.

“That’s enough to cover one flight, and we want to do our bit,” she said.
