Nanango resident Rita Glasbergen turned 90 on Wednesday … nothing really unusual in that these days, except when you get serenaded at your local supermarket!
Rita’s neighbour Jeanette McBride organised the special surprise, with the help of the staff at Nanango’s IGA store.
Rita lives by herself in Nanango, managing with a little bit of outside help.
“Her family visited at the weekend but I knew she was going to be alone on her birthday,” Jeanette said.
So she got cracking …
“Rita does her shopping every Wednesday with a carer and I knew about what time they would be going,” Jeanette said.
She teed up the surprise with the IGA staff so that when Rita walked into the store, they all burst out into a chorus of “Happy Birthday”.
Rita was also presented with a big box of chocolates and a bunch of flowers.
“IGA were so great. They were more than happy to do it,” Jeanette said.
And Rita was astounded.
“You couldn’t wipe the smile off her face and she couldn’t figure out how they all knew it was her birthday!”

What a wonderful gesture….happy birthday Rita. Congratulations to the IGA staff in Nanango but most of all to the very caring neighbour who organised the surprise.
