Senior jockeys and track officials walk back to the mounting yard after inspecting the track on Saturday afternoon

The South Burnett Race Club’s annual Caulfield Cup Day meeting at Wondai was called off on Saturday afternoon before it could even start.

Senior jockeys and officials walked the track before Race 1, paying close attention to three sections of the sand track.

As the Race 1 jump time passed, the chances of the five-race meeting going ahead looked dismal, despite very little rain actually falling near Wondai.

This was confirmed about 10 minutes later with the announcement that after a long inspection, and consultations between senior and junior riders, it had been determined the track was not suitable for racing.

The meeting, which was to feature the annual Roy and Glenis Radunz Wondai Cup as well as a qualifier for the Country Stampede at Doomben, was officially abandoned at 1:45pm.

The abandoned meeting follows the early abandonment of the winter meeting at the same track on May 30 after Race 1.
