Gordonbrook artist Romaine Undery’s mixed media works – including these unusual clocks – are the centrepiece of this month’s exhibition at the Wondai Regional Art Gallery

November 11, 2014

A large crowd packed into the Wondai Regional Art Gallery on Friday night for the opening of the gallery’s next-to-last exhibition for the year.

They had come to see new mixed media works by Gordonbrook artist Romaine Undery, hand-made craftworks produced by the Murgon Spinners and Weavers Group, and a smaller exhibition by Widgee artist Milly Hine.

They also came to support the children of Kumbia State School, who have mounted an exhibition of their own in the Gallery’s “Kidz Korner”.

Romaine Undery’s works fill the Main Gallery this month.

They range from small, intricately decorated wall clocks through to painted doors, with a large number of more traditional paintings in between.

Romaine works as a supply teacher during her non-painting hours, and several workmates from local schools were on hand to cheer her on, including Windera State School principal (and part-time musician) Guy Davis who provided the evening’s musical entertainment.

The Murgon Spinners and Weavers group gathered a lot of attention for their own exhibition, which packed out the Front Gallery.

A woven, rainbow-coloured shawl which is hanging at one end of the gallery caught the attention of many.

The group meets at Murgon’s Graham House on the first and third Thursdays of each month to teach spinning, weaving and dyeing, and draws members from as far afield as Durong.

Widgee artist Millie Hine also drew a lot of admiration for her colourful exhibition in the Third Gallery, which includes a “wicker man” 3D sculpture made from cardboard and lashings of a pest plant which chokes local creeks in the Widgee area.

Millie was last seen at the Gallery in May this year when she came to support her friend, Gympie artist Cecile Steenbergen, whose exhibition catalogued the decline of the Mary Valley Railway.

The current exhibition will remain on display at the Gallery from 10:00am to 4:00pm daily until the end of the month.

The Gallery will also host “Capture The Magic” – a photographic exhibition by amateur phoptographers who participated in a special workshop held in the Bunya Mountains this month – from 11:00am to 3:00pm on Friday, November 28.

Admission to this special one-day exhibition, which includes light snacks and a glass of wine on arrival, will be $10 for adults (children are free) but to assist with catering an RSVP by November 21 to Lesley on 0427-686-224 would be greatly appreciated.

The Gallery will then close for five days from December 1-5 to allow for the installation of Robyn Dower’s December-January exhibition “Sense Of Wonder”.

This exhibition will open to the public on Friday night, December 5.
