Junior sporting organisations in the South Burnett have until Friday (December 13) to apply for funding through the Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund.

“I am honoured to put my name to this fund as the Mayor of the South Burnett,” Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said.

“It is with great pleasure that we opened the first round with $10,000 going towards Junior Sport in the region.

“Obesity rates and sedentary lifestyle throughout Australia are a concern and studies show an effective preventive measure is to have people being active from a young age.

“We have so many great sporting organisations in the region who are run almost completely by volunteers.

“We are very interested in funding projects with a focus on programs that provide disadvantaged young people with the opportunity to participate in sport.”

The Mayor’s Community Benefit Fund was set up as a fund rather than a trust to minimise the amount of paperwork required from applicants.

“A trust has a lot more red tape and we wanted access to these funds to be streamlined and flexible. The application form is a four page document including collecting basic contact information,” he said.

“I would encourage sporting organisations to visit Council’s website and download the application form over the next week and apply for these funds.”

Council’s sport and recreation spokesman Cr Barry Green said it was great to see the first round of the funds going to junior sport.

“The committee will look at each application on their merits and funds will be distributed based on priorities and projects,” Cr Green said.

Mayor Kratzmann said he encouraged Councillors, Council staff and the general public to put forward ideas for future funding rounds.

“We would like some stand-by funds sitting in this fund in the case the region is hit by another natural disaster or there is an immediate need elsewhere,” he said.
