The South Burnett Regional Council paid a special tribute last week to the 65-plus volunteers who help out at the region’s visitor information centres, art galleries, libraries and museums.
The council held its annual Volunteer Forum in Kingaroy RSL’s Tobruk Room to introduce the different groups of volunteers to one another, provide them with updates on the different roles each service performs in the community, and pass on the thanks of Councillors and senior staff for the valuable work the volunteers carry out.
During the course of a full day the volunteers were treated to morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea along with two talks by guest speakers Alice Greenup and Liz Caffery.
Alice is the author of “Educating Alice”, a recently released memoir of her introduction to the South Burnett and her life alongside husband Rick running the cattle studs ‘Cardowan’, at Ironpot, and ‘Greenup Eidsvold Station’.
She entertained the crowd with the story of a fateful horse riding accident that almost killed her, as well as the trials and tribulations of writing 100,000 words while juggling home, family and work.
And later in the day noted Nanango historian Liz Caffery gave the audience a sneak preview of her soon-to-be-released book about the 2011 floods and their impact on the South Burnett.
The day was also broken up by a variety of fun quizzes and games, and even a cake decorating competition.
Compere Michael Hunter said that volunteers were invaluable to the region.
He said that many of the services they help operate would be unaffordable if the council had to employ staff to run them.
