A 77-year-old Kilkivan man suffered severe head and chest injuries after his 4WD crashed into a semi-trailer on the Wide Bay Highway on Wednesday afternoon.

A police spokesman said the incident occurred about 4:00pm between Spencer Road and Oakview Road, just east of Kilkivan.

The prime-mover, which was pulling a trailer and dog-trailer, was parked in a rest area when the LandCruiser hit it.

The truck driver, a 57-year-old man from Oakey, was not injured.

The Kilkivan man had to be cut from the wreckage by emergency personnel.

He was transferred by road ambulance to Kilkivan Sportsground and then airlifted by the AGL Action Rescue Helicopter to Nambour General Hospital in a serious condition.
