The Burnett Catchment Care Association is encouraging producers to apply for funding through the Federal Government’s recently announced “Smart Farms” program.

The program is part of the $1.08 billion National Landcare Program that will run over the next six years.

The NLP is a natural resource management program to protect and conserve soil, water, plants, animals and ecosystems while supporting productive and sustainable use of these valuable resources.

The Smart Farm Small Grants initiative is to develop and extend new tools, methods and technologies that achieve these outcomes.

Eligible activities need to deliver benefits to the wider community.

They could include:

  • Improving soil biology and structure for improved soil health and increased production
  • Maintaining good ground cover to reduce soil and nutrient losses from erosion
  • Activities that increase the knowledge and capacity of land managers to better manage soil and vegetation
  • Demonstrations, pilots and trials to adapt soil and vegetation management practices and systems for regional conditions.

Individual landholders and groups can apply directly for grants of between $5000 and $100,000.

Applications close on December 7.
